Di recente Rai 5 ha mandato in onda Maria Stuarda di Donizetti, una mia produzione del 2008. Mentre i titoli di coda scorrevano sugli applausi scroscianti che salutavano Mariella Devia, Anna Caterina Antonacci e Francesco Meli, i miei occhi si sono fermati sul nome di Lorenza Cantini. Ci eravamo sentiti prima che se ne andasse, ma era da molto tempo che non la vedevo. Per anni Lorenza è stata al mio fianco in ogni mia produzione scaligera. Era sempre rimasta la stessa ragazzina del primo incontro: appariva minuta e fragile nei suoi semplici panni neri, caracollante sugli alti tacchi degli stivali, la bellissima chioma bruna svolazzante a incorniciare l’ovale perfetto del viso, illuminato sempre da un sorriso rasserenante. Ma nel suo lavoro era tutt’altro che fragile, sempre efficientissima e rassicurante. Tra noi è nata subito una bella amicizia, rallegrata dopo lunghe giornate di prove in Teatro da ottime cene insieme a Brian nelle trattorie milanesi di Porta Garibaldi, il loro quartiere. Serate di chiacchiere e risate rilassanti. Ecco un dato caratteristico del nostro lavoro insieme oltre alla perfetta intesa e la complicità: il dono costante e gratificante dell’allegria.

As the credits rolled by, over the thunderous applause for Mariella Devia, Anna Caterina Antonacci and Francesco Meli, my eyes were drawn to Lorenza Cantini’s name. We had spoken just before she died, but I hadn’t seen her in a long time. For years Lorenza had been at my side in all my La Scala productions. She had always continued to be the same girl of our first meeting: minute and apparently fragile in her simple black clothes, characterized by her high-heeled boots, with her beautiful dark hair fluttering about, framing her perfect oval face, always illuminated by a soothing smile. But in her work, she was anything but fragile, always very efficient and reassuring. A beautiful friendship was immediately born between us, cheered up after long days of rehearsals in the theatre by excellent dinners together with Brian in Milan’s trattorias around Porta Garibaldi, their neighbourhood. Evenings of chatter and relaxing laughter. Here is a characteristic of our work together in addition to perfect understanding and complicity: the constant and rewarding gift of joy.
